How to Prepare for a Sleep Study:

Where do I go for my sleep study?
Sleep studies are provided in one of our sleep evaluation labs, Carrollton, Douglasville, Hiram, and Peachtree City. Arrival time will be given to you at the time your sleep study appointment is made. It is very important to arrive on time, not earlier than 15 minutes prior to scheduled time. Your study will take most of the night, finishing the next morning between 5:00am to 7:00am.

What do I bring to my sleep study?
Bring a two-piece pajama or sleep wear (shorts and a t-shirt are acceptable), and a favorite pillow and/or blanket if you have one. Please keep the amount of belongings you bring to a minimum. Bring all completed paper work to your study and all medications in their original bottles that you routinely take at night.

What happens to me during the sleep study?
You will be greeted and escorted to your sleep room by the sleep technologist. The technologist will answer any questions you may have and will leave you to change into night ware. Next you will go to the Sleep Evaluation Prep room to get “hooked-up” where the technologist will gently apply different colored electrodes to your scalp, beside your eyes under your chin on your chest and on your legs below the knee. These electrodes will monitor all parameters during your sleep which will aid in an accurate diagnosis of your condition. Once your hook-up is complete the technologist will help you get comfortably settled into bed and will conduct calibrations which are verbal instructions that you follow while being recorded. The calibrations are to ensure that the equipment is reading your eye movements, breathing and other functions correctly. When the calibrations are finished you will be asked to complete a bedtime questionnaire, then you are ready to begin your sleep study. The technologist will be in the Control Room adjacent to the sleep room all night and will assist you as needed throughout the night. When your study recording time is complete the technologist will awaken you and conduct post calibrations similar to those done before the start of your study at the beginning of the night. Then all of the electrodes and measuring devices will be removed and you can shower and get dressed. You will be asked to fill out a morning time questionnaire before leaving for home or work.

What happens after my sleep study?
When your sleep study is completed, the technologist will remove all measuring devices. You are welcomed to then shower, dress and leave for work or home. You can expect a call and follow-up appointment from your physician to review the sleep study results.

Do I have to do anything special the day of my sleep study?
Avoid napping on the day of the test.
Make sure all gels, creams, sprays or mousse is washed from your hair. Remove all make-up before arriving to the Sleep Center. Take all medications as usual unless told otherwise. Also, avoid caffeine intake (coffee, tea, coca-cola or chocolate) past noon the day of your study (test).
